To Choose the Right Dog Kennel, Ask Yourself These Questions First

How To Choose Outdoor Dog Kennels

Backyard dog kennels are containment systems that provide your pet with a safe play area that cannot be easily escaped.  There are kennels to suit any size dog and any space, including patios and decks!  To simplify shopping, you should answer these questions:

How much room do I have?  The size of your kennel may be restricted by the space that is available in your yard.  For a happy pet, it is suggested that you purchase the largest dog kennel that your space and budget will allow.

What are my pet’s needs?  Affordable dog kennels are available in a variety of sizes and range from 4 to 6 feet tall. The dog kennel really cannot be too big for your pet but it can be too small. Consider your pet’s size and activity level before choosing a kennel.  Energetic dogs will enjoy a long kennel with space to run. Taller kennels are appropriate for large breed dogs, pets that jump, or in areas where predators can leap into the kennel.

How will I provide shelter from predators, sun and bad weather? Your dog kennels do not provide shelter, simply a safe place to play.  Consider purchasing a dog house or adding a roof to your pet’s kennel to provide shade and shelter.  There are also large dog kennels available with chain link roofs to prevent escape and to provide extra protection from predators.

What type of kennel best fits our needs?  When constructing a dog kennel you should consider if you want to purchase a modular kennel, a boxed kennel kit, or if you want to build your own.

Modular Outdoor Dog Kennels

Modular dog kennels are constructed from 5 foot wide pre-fabricated panels that can be connected together.  These affordable kennels can be customized into many different sizes and shapes.  They are easy to assemble and modify.

Boxed Dog Kennel Kits

Boxed dog kennel kits are the most affordable type of dog kennel available.  These kits come with pre-cut parts and hardware for easy assembly.  Unfortunately, boxed kennel kits may not be available in large sizes or custom layouts.

DIY Backyard Dog Kennels

Constructing your own outdoor dog kennels may seem like the best dog kennel option, however, it takes considerable time, money and research to complete this project.  Your finished product may not have a professional appearance or be as secure. If you do decide to build your own dog kennel, carefully plan this project before starting.

What materials should my kennel be made of? Kennels can be made of plastic, wood or metal.  For a long lasting, strong kennel, look for sturdy kennels made out of galvanized steel to guard against corrosion.  Choose a kennel with heavy, strong wire that is typically between 8 to 12 gauge diameter.  Consider your pet’s energy, size and aggression when deciding on wire strength. You can’t go wrong with thicker wire!

Choosing the best dog kennel for your pet is easy when you take the time to evaluate your space constraints and the pet’s needs and personality.  Check out your local pet stores or visit one of the many online retailers to learn more about purchasing dog kennels.
